TL;DR

You take your finances seriously. So, it makes sense that you would take your choice of lender seriously, too. When you select a company to refinance with, you kick off a financial relationship that will likely last years—if not decades. According to the Education Data Initiative, the average borrower takes 20 years to pay off their student loans. That’s longer than some marriages. Yes, you can always switch lenders later by refinancing your student loans again. But, as with a spouse, it’s much nicer to choose right the first time.

The quality of your lender relationship can make a massive difference in your stress levels around student loan repayment. So, how can you tell which lender is going to be a good fit? Read real reviews from real borrowers.

To help you make your choice, our research team interviewed a wide range of Earnest customers to learn why they chose the way they did. Here’s what they said. Individuals portrayed as Earnest clients are actual clients and were compensated for their participation. Results may vary.

Don’t just take your lender’s word for their services; look for advice from the folks in the trenches. These are all real Earnest borrower stories our research team has gathered to help you make your decision.

1. Borrowers say Earnest offers an intuitive, transparent user experience.

A number of borrowers said they were drawn to Earnest’s ease of use. Folks appreciated the intuitive loan calculator tools, straightforward application process, and streamlined loan dashboard.

“Earnest’s site doesn’t feel like it’s trying to sell me something constantly, which I like,” said one borrower.

“[The whole system] was automated,” said another, who refinanced her law school loans with Earnest a few years ago. “And it wasn’t so complex that I felt like I needed to talk to somebody on the phone... They would send an email with a request, and the request was always pretty straightforward." That puts loan repayment on autopilot—and lets you focus on growing your career and building a life.

Finances are complicated enough; the least your lender can do is make it easy to navigate the process.

2. Earnest’s eligibility criteria are more flexible than with other lenders.

Some lenders expect borrowers to have a specific credit score or meet a long list of eligibility criteria to qualify for service. But Earnest tends to be a little more flexible, especially with borrowers who have sub-par credit or high loan amounts. That’s according to one pharmacy school graduate who recently refinanced more than $300,000 with Earnest.

“No one wanted to take on that large amount,” she said. “You hear about the companies like SoFi... everyone says they're the best ones, but they don't accept people with these huge amounts of loans.”

So far, she says, the refinance process has been “very easy,” and she plans to refinance again in the future if her financial situation continues to improve.

3. Borrowers were drawn to Earnest’s lower interest rates.

Customer service matters, but for a lot of borrowers, the final decision comes down to a lender’s affordability. While many lenders promise low rates, this borrower says Earnest delivered.

"I think I’ve dropped from 6.75% to just over 3.5%, so… a significant reduction,” said one New York attorney, who refinanced about $145,000 in student debt with Earnest.

Because Earnest lets borrowers choose from a wide range of loan terms, he was able to select a 5-year repayment period. Between the shorter term and the significantly lower rate, he’ll save thousands of dollars over the life of his loan.

4. Earnest’s flexible repayment features are a huge perk.

Earnest doesn’t just let borrowers choose a loan term that works for their schedule; it also lets borrowers customize their payment frequency. That’s been one of the most appealing perks for a Missouri-based law school grad we spoke to. He’s recently refinanced just one of his loans with Earnest to get a feel for the platform and test out the service.

“A lot of people in my situation that just graduated refinanced with Earnest, and they all had positive comments,” he said. “One thing I was looking for was the ease of setting up bi-weekly payments." While his previous loan servicer made it difficult to automate this kind of payment frequency—even though it’s a common way to reduce overall loan costs —and his experience with Earnest was seamless.

Right now, this up-and-coming lawyer says he’s continuing to monitor rates and is open to refinancing more of his loans with Earnest if the experience continues to deliver.
