Spring break is an exciting time for college students, especially those who choose to go on a trip with friends or family. While it may be tempting to do so, using your student loan money on spring break is not a good idea.
Student loans are designed for qualified educational expenses like tuition, room and board, and books, not spring break trips. Here’s how to save money over spring break and keep your finances in check during your week off from school.
Shop around for deals
Even though traveling during spring break is expensive, it is possible to land some great deals. Do your research and explore options through various airlines, hotels, and resorts. You can even work with a travel agent that may provide you with cost-effective ideas you might not be able to find on your own.
Book your trip early
If you wait until the last minute to book your spring trip, there’s a good chance you’ll overspend. Be proactive and figure out your spring break plans as early as possible. The earlier you’re able to reserve your flights and hotel, the more likely you are to save some money.
Look for jobs over spring break
There are plenty of flexible part-time jobs that are perfect for college students. Many of them can allow you to earn fast cash and cover your spring break expenses without relying on loans. You could teach English online, sell unwanted items, tutor other students, or babysit. If you already work, you can always take on an extra gig so you have more money to put toward spring break.
Prepare your own meals
While it’s fun to try new restaurants while on a spring break trip, the cost of dining out can add up quickly. To lower your overall food budget while traveling, cook some of your own meals. You can go to a local grocery store to stock up on some foods that will keep you satisfied for most of your breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. Of course, you can treat yourself to occasional meals out if your budget allows you to.
Look for free entertainment
Most destinations offer free or low cost entertainment and activities. Once you determine where you’re going, figure out how you’ll spend your time without breaking the bank. Perhaps you’ll hang out at the beach or hike at a local park. Or maybe you’ll visit free museums or enjoy a free festival or concert.
Why you shouldn’t use your student loans on spring break
If you take out student loans, make sure to put the money towards what they’re intended for: college tuition and fees, room and board, institutional fees, books and supplies, transportation, dependent care expenses, and professional licensures. By using the funds for spring break or another vacation, you’ll be violating your loan agreement. Plus you’ll accrue interest and in turn, have to pay even more for your trip once you graduate.
